The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the biggest ever: 48 teams, 104 matches, 16 cities across three countries and four time zones. It’s also shaping up to be the most carbon-emitting World Cup on record.
The numbers. Estimates vary by methodology, but every one points the same direction sharply up:

The driver behind both estimates is the same air travel accounts for 87-90% of total emissions, as a tournament spread across three countries and four time zones pushes fans and squads onto the longest routes any World Cup has required.
The credibility problem. FIFA claimed Qatar 2022 would be the first “fully carbon-neutral” World Cup; in 2023 the Swiss Fairness Commission ruled that claim unsubstantiated. FIFA’s current sponsorship deal with Saudi Aramco, the state oil company, adds to that pattern. Researchers estimate it could induce an extra 30 million tonnes of CO2e in 2026 due to increased sales for the fossil fuel company.
What’s being done. Genuine positives exist: all 16 venues are existing stadiums, avoiding the new-build emissions that plagued Qatar and Russia. Several cities have pledged renewable electricity for official sites (Houston, Atlanta’s solar-powered Mercedes-Benz Stadium), and waste/recycling programs are rolling out at fan zones. But none of this touches the real problem, flights.
What would actually help. Experts converge on one point: treat travel as the main lever, not an afterthought. That means choosing denser, better-connected host cities, making sustainability a real criterion in bid selection (not just venue operations), pushing rail/coach travel between nearby cities over flights, and replacing contested “carbon neutral” marketing with transparent, independently verified accounting.
