The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a pivotal EU regulation enhancing sustainability disclosures for companies. It mandates detailed reporting on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts, risks, and performance using the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Phased in starting 2025, initially targeting large companies and eventually listed SMEs by around 2028 to improve transparency and comparability.
The requirements apply to EU companies with ≥ 1,000 employees and €450 M+ turnover, as well as non-EU companies with €450 M+ turnover generated in the EU, including EU branches and subsidiaries with €200 M+ EU revenue. Reporting obligations are simplified, with sector-specific details remaining optional. Smaller companies (fewer than 1,000 employees) are protected from additional reporting burdens beyond voluntary standards. To support compliance, the European Commission will introduce a digital portal providing standardized templates and practical guidance.
A key feature of CSRD is the requirement for third-party assurance by an accredited verifier, ensuring the credibility and accuracy of reported ESG data. This transforms sustainability reporting from a voluntary practice to a regulatory obligation. To remain compliant and credible, companies must integrate ESG into core governance and strategy making early preparation and expert verification essential to meet stakeholder expectations and regulatory demands.
