As the transport and logistics sector works toward ambitious net-zero targets, momentum is growing around biofuels and transparent emissions reduction mechanisms. Several high-profile partnerships have emerged, each taking a unique approach to implementation, verification, and scalability.
Here’s an updated snapshot of major initiatives shaping the future of sustainable shipping:
ZEMBA + Hapag-Lloyd
- What: The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) is the first major buyers group in the maritime sector, formed to accelerate the commercial adoption of scalable clean shipping solutions. Cargo owners including Amazon, IKEA, and Patagonia are collaborating with Hapag-Lloyd to fuel voyages using certified waste-based biomethane.
-First tender launched (RFP issued Sep 2023); operations begin 2025–2026, covering 1 billion TEU-miles and avoiding ~82,000 t CO₂e.
-Additional vessels to join in 2025, expanding routes including Asia–Europe.
- Transparency: Utilizes a Book & Claim system, developed with RMI and the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center.
- Key Update: Active voyages are now underway; further carrier partnerships expected in 2025.
Microsoft + NORDEN
- What: Danish shipping company NORDEN is working on a pilot project with Microsoft to help reduce its maritime supply chain emissions by utilising NORDEN’s biofuel voyage and Book and Claim solution, we’re helping Microsoft reducing their maritime emissions.
-Launched May 2025 as a 3-year project, targeting a reduction of ~10,000 t CO₂e.
- Transparency: Follows Smart Freight Centre (SFC) standards; registry-traceable and double-audited with RSB integration.
- Key Update: Project has been live since May 2025; registry entries and audits are in progress.
Greencarrier – Biofuel Insets Campaign
- What: Swedish forwarder Greencarrier launched a promotional campaign offering free maritime biofuel insets (1,000 t) for new customer shipments.
- How it Works: Clients receive CO₂ reduction documentation via a Book & Claim methodology, making biofuel insetting accessible for low-cost or trial implementation.
