Verification Season At a Glance
As international climate regulations tighten, the maritime sector is under increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Emission season reporting under EU MRV, UK MRV, Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings, and FuelEU Maritime frameworks plays a critical role in tracking, verifying, and driving these reductions. Shipping Emission Seasons refer to defined reporting periods when maritime operators submit emissions data via the THETIS Platform to regulatory authorities such as the European Commission. These structured reporting cycles enhance accountability, improve emissions tracking, and accelerate carbon reduction efforts.

Normec Verifavia successfully completed the EU MRV/ETS 2024 verification season and secured FuelEU Accreditation, reaffirming its commitment to precision, regulatory compliance, and environmental responsibility. As of February 26, 2025, Normec Verifavia SAS has been accredited by COFRAC (Accreditation No. 3-2127) under ISO 17029 to verify environmental claims for maritime activities under FuelEU Maritime. This accreditation followed a successful audit with no major non-conformities. Post-accreditation, over 600+ FuelEU Monitoring Plan assessments were completed via THETIS, reinforcing regulatory compliance and continuous improvement through training programs and policy seminars.

Operators using LNG cargo as fuel faced additional challenges, as Nitrogen, which
does not contribute to CO₂ emissions, can be excluded from total LNG consumption.
Despite constituting around 0.5% of LNG composition, its exclusion significantly impacted
EUA calculations, sometimes reducing LNG consumption values and EUAs by up to 20%. These cases require technical expertise and analytical results of the composition of LNG to ensure accurate regulatory compliance.
IMO Data Collection System (DCS) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) mandate vessels above 5,000 GRT to report fuel usage and emissions, contributing to global regulatory benchmarks. CII evaluates ship fuel efficiency, rating vessels A to E, where maintaining high ratings is critical to avoid performance penalties. Normec Verifavia successfully delivered 1,300+ SOC for IMO DCS Verification and COC for SEEMP II and SEEMP III across flag administrations, including Liberian flag, Panama flag, and Vanuatu flag, Antigua and Barbuda and with RO’s RINA, and under our partnership with Korean Register & RINA.
With the CII regulation having completed 3 verification years, its now mandatory for vessels with continuous D rating in these 3 years to undertake a corrective action plan for SEEMP III alongwith the vessels with E rating in 2024 as well. With the CII guidelines making the ratings system more stringent with each progressing year, it is essential for operator to ensure optimum vessel operations. These corrective plans are essential in line with the Audits undertaken on vessels.
