Is an AMP required for my vessel?
Yes, if asbestos is detected onboard your vessel, an AMP is required.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral known for its insulating and fire-resistant properties, which poses a severe threat to maritime safety. Although a global ban on its use is in place, many vessels built before 2011 still contain asbestos, which can potentially harm the crew, passengers, and the environment. Fortunately, with proper asbestos handling measures, shipowners can efficiently manage this risk while ensuring compliance with regulations.
Asbestos exposure can cause severe respiratory illnesses, including mesothelioma and lung cancer, and is listed as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization. The International Maritime Organization recognizes this threat and has implemented strict regulations through the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
SOLAS Regulation II-1/3-5 prohibits the installation of new asbestos on ships built after 2002. For already existing vessels, Asbestos Management Plans (AMPs) are mandatory. These plans specify the location and type of asbestos present, outlining safe management and removal procedures. Regular asbestos resampling and disposal by authorized facilities are also required under SOLAS.
We have a 100% dispensation success rate for developed AMPs across various Flag States. We have completed over 450 asbestos projects with more than 150 successful asbestos removal projects, 100+ asbestos disposal projects, and 80+ asbestos resampling projects.
At Normec Verifavia, we provide shipowners with a one-stop-shop solution to navigate the complexities of asbestos management, including:
If asbestos is found onboard, the initial action involves preparing an Asbestos Management Plan (AMP). Subsequently, dispensation is sought from the flag state based on the contents of the AMP. The maximum allowable dispensation period is three years from the date of the contravention.
Once dispensation is granted, a comprehensive assessment is conducted, which may include resampling various systems for asbestos. Subsequently, an asbestos abatement plan is formulated to facilitate the removal of all materials containing asbestos.
Following the asbestos abatement plan, certified professionals are dispatched to the vessel to handle the removal of asbestos-containing materials. Once the removal process is finalized, all asbestos-containing materials are transported to a certified disposal facility for proper handling and safe disposal.
